Kurt Kinetic is a one of the leading manufacturers of indoor bike trainers and has gained a reputation for quality and dependability. One of their best selling models is the Kurt Kinetic Road Machine, a trainer that has become a favorite amongst serious cyclists. The reasons why it has become so favored include the high design, engineering and manufacturing standards.

The Road Machine is a fluid trainer, which means that its resistance is derived from fluid encased in the drive wheel. This is generally a superior form of resistance when measured against other types of trainers which gain their resistance from wind or magnetic power.

Like most fluid trainers, it is remarkably quiet and delivers a very smooth ride. Even more importantly, it delivers true progressive resistance, which means that resistance is increased the faster the bike is pedaled. This is in contrast to other trainers which have a dial or lever which is used to manually manipulate the resistance levels. The end result is a ride that feels much more road-like and natural, which is important if you value the continuity of ride between the summer and winter months, when a trainer is usually used.

One problem that has been present with some brands of fluid trainers is a tendency to leak fluids, causing a large mess. What sets the Road Machine apart is the patented resistance system that Kurt Kinetic has developed to virtually make leaks a thing of the past. Redesigning the unit so that the fluid chamber is completely sealed off from everything else has resulted in a dramatic drop in leakage and an increase in the popularity of fluid trainers in general.

One of the few drawbacks of this trainer is its size. Although not terribly large, it does have a bigger, bulkier footprint than many other bike trainers, which makes it a little harder to store in an out of the way spot in your house, and definitely harder to transport to other locations. If you are used to using a bicycle trainer that is easy to throw in the trunk, or carry around by hand, you might find this trainer to be a little harder to handle. The upside of this is that it is very solid and sturdy, which helps to produce a feeling of quality and dependability.

Overall, the Kurt Kinetic Road Machine is a superior example of an indoor bike trainer. Given the fact that it comes with a lifetime warranty it just might be the last trainer you will ever have to buy.

One of the things that happens when you have been riding a bicycle for a long time, and perhaps even joined a cycling club, is that you start wearing all the proper clothing, a bit like a uniform. Maybe it starts out as a fashion thing, as the cycle jerseys can look really cool, but by the stage when you are getting dressed up in Lycra and shaving your legs (if you’re a man), you might have to admit you have a problem – or you are a serious road racer! It is worth pointing out that the leg-shaving has nothing to do with speed or aerodynamics; it is to help with healing cuts and grazes from the many crashes you will have a road cycle racer; and to prevent them from getting infected.

One of the never ending debates that goes on between cyclists is whether normal cycling shorts are best, or are the cycling bib shorts better. The difference between the two types regards the method used for holding them onto your body. Regular cycling shorts are like any other shorts, with an elasticated waistband, whereas cycle bib shorts do not have the waistband. Instead, they have two suspenders or straps that you pull over your shoulders to hold up the shorts. For serious racing, many riders do prefer the bib cycling shorts, because after hours in the saddle and sweating through exertion, the waistband on normal ones can start chafing your skin. This is needless and preventable pain, so waistbands are avoided if at all possible.

In both cases you get the benefit of moisture wicking materials, so you are not left drenched with sweat; it simply gets channeled to the outer surface where it rapidly evaporates. Both styles of cycle shorts incorporate a padded chamois to protect your sensitive regions on long haul rides.

The only real downside to bib cycling shorts is that it is a little bit of a hassle to get them down when you are desperate for a rest room break. In fact, you might need to remove all your racing tops to get to the straps on your shoulders! The best advice here is to pull the straps up over your shoulders after you have all your layers on, and then you only need to wear a single cycle jersey over the top of the straps – problem solved! There are a few companies around that make lower cut cycling bib shorts to make the “toilet stop” easier to do, Assos being one of them, but let’s face it; Assos are one of the top companies for cycle wear, and a really good pair of their bib shorts could easily set you back $250. It would be far easier to follow the advice about pulling up the bib straps on your penultimate layer, and buy a more affordable pair of Pearl Izumi bibs for $50 – or of course, you can always decide to shun bib shorts in favor of the regular style of cycling shorts!

Diadora have been manufacturing their famous road bike cycling shoes now since the second world war, and are seen as one of the world leaders. Their technology is second to none, from breathable uppers made of topgrade materials, even on their cheapest models, to solid soles, important for any cyclist.

The soles of a Diaroda cycling shoe are important because of the way in which power is transferred from the cyclist through to the pedal, and down through the cranks into forward motion. If you don’t cycle regularly at speed then this won’t be of much interest to you, but if you do then, like me, you will know that once you get past about 20mph it all gets very keen with being as efficient as possible at transferring very ounce of wattage generated by your legs into the bike. And this is where these shoes excel.

If you wear a regular training shoe on a bike then you probably aren’t aware of how much energy you are actually wasting. It only takes a moments thought though to see what actually might be going on. A regular walking shoe of any sort is built to conform to the shape of you foot as you walk – in other words it bends. If it didn’t you would feel pretty darn uncomfortable.

But a proper road cycling shoe, such as in the Diadora range, doesn’t bend, or at least it bends very little. (In fact in some of the top carbon models, bend and sole flex is almost zero!)

You are attached by cleats – little bits of metal – to your pedals and as you exert power you don’t lose it through either the flex of the on your shoe, or through the flex of your foot since all the energy is equally distributed to the sole of the shoe, and then focused down into the crank shaft.

So why buy diadora cycling shoes? Simple, it does the job of converting leg power into forward motion efficiently, with good quality materials, at a reasonable price. Well worth checking out.
